Oh deer!

I was on my way to work this morning on the Mass Pike when I was passed by a State Police cruiser going quite fast. I didn't think much of it until I got to exit 11. There, the cruiser and a Mass Highway pickup truck were stopped blocking the right lane. Just as I was going by the cruiser I saw a large deer, bloody and on the ground in the breakdown lane, desperately trying to stand up. It looked more as if it was trying to crawl away. Then, I saw the trooper pull out his handgun and shoot the deer in the head from a short distance. 
I did not see any other cars in the area so I am not sure who/what hit the deer. I am just glad the cop got there quickly and put the animal out of its misery.
