"Go with Rust-Oleum" they said.
"You won't regret it" they said.
There are so many problems with Rust-Oleum's countertop finishing product that I don't even know where to start. I guess I will start here...
I would like to know who at Rust-Oleum does market research and product testing and I would like to kick that person square in the nuts; not once, not twice but three times. Whoever thought that one quart of tar-like goop is enough to cover 50 square feet of countertop space has clearly never used the product or is delusional. I had barely enough for one thin layer on my 36 square foot counters. With the amount of liquid provided, the phrase 'apply a thick layer of base coat, like icing a cake' is so utterly retarded that it is actually comical. Has anyone at Suck-Oleum ever seen a cake being iced?
Without enough base, the color flakes will not cover evenly and the old counter top will show through, which is exactly what happened and almost gave me a stroke. This problem could be easily solved by more base coat. Unfortunately it is not available outside of the complete refinishing kit. So if you want your countertops to look half way decent, you need to get two kits at $250 a pop. Between the two kits, brushes, rollers, sand paper this whole project has cost over $600. I could have had new laminate countertops for that kind of money.
Suck-Oleum claims that:
Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations is the simple, affordable and hassle-free way to transform worn or damaged laminate countertops into beautiful, durable, new counter surfaces – in a weekend and without the hefty mess and high cost of countertop replacement. What a load of crap. There is nothing simple, affordable or hassle free about this if you need to get two kits and do the work twice. Besides, this product requires a lot of prep work and is extremely messy, especially during the application of the base coat, applying the wetting agent, sprinkling of the color chips and sanding; basically the entire process. About the only step that is not messy is the first step; opening of the box.
My countertops are not done yet. They still need a layer of the clear coat, which I hope to have done in the next day or two. It will be very interesting to see what the final product looks like. Either way, I will be getting most of the money back. Suck-Oleum has a 100% satisfaction guarantee and I AM NOT SATISFIED.
